Feeling Dizzy

Help with dizziness in later life.

Dizziness, also known as vertigo, is not only more common but also more persistent in people over 50. It is more likely to be due to physical rather than psychological causes and is more incapacitating in older people.

Dizziness is caused by various medical conditions like high or low blood pressure, heart or neurological disorders and some psychiatric conditions. Some causes have minor effects whilst other causes can be serious and even life-threatening. As a general rule, if you feel dizzy regularly and you do not know why, you should see a consultant.

Common effects of dizziness include feeling anxious about standing up, which can reduce your mobility. Other symptoms linked to dizziness are feeling sick, falls, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), amnesia and anxiety.

Dizzy spells should not be looked at in isolation. Our team of consultants will review your physical health history and social circumstances, devising treatments plans that include a variety of medicines and physical therapies.

    Falls

Help with falls in later life.

Falls and unsteadiness are common problems in later life but are not a normal part of getting older. Balance and movement are complex activities which we take for granted throughout most of our lives, but various factors can affect them, and reductions in mobility and confidence after a fall can lead to a progressive loss of health, fitness and independence. Falling more than once in a year, or any fall that results in a need for medical attention, suggests that there might be an underlying cause, and a thorough assessment is required.

Medical conditions like Parkinson’s, arthritis, joint problems, pain, disease, and neurological difficulties (brain and nervous system) contribute to falls. Sometimes several mild problems occur in unison resulting in an increased risk of falls.

Falls are the number one mobility problem that older people experience. Falls result in broken bones, bruises, and loss of confidence.

If you want help, please contact us and we can arrange our consultant to see you and assess the possible causes and risk factors for falls. Your consultant may need assessments from our other specialists (e.g., a physiotherapist) to ensure that a comprehensive treatment plan is developed.

      Feeling low or sad

Help with feeling low in later life

Most people can feel sad, depressed, stressed or anxious at times. This is a normal part of life.  As you grow older, some of life’s events and experiences can leave us feeling in low spirits or cause depression.

Low mood may be  a symptom of an underlying health condition. It may be due to depression, thyroid gland conditions, anaemia, stroke or bereavement.  If low mood lasts more than a few days, it may be symptom of one of these conditions.

Feeling low in mood has an impact on motivation.  Motivation is important for engaging in everyday living.  When you are feeling low, lack of motivation to get involved in social activities and the community is common.

Feeling low may also affect your sleep pattern, leaving you feeling exhausted and unable to complete everyday chores. People who feel low may also feel anxious, which increases their distress even more.

        I can’t sleep

Help with sleep in later life.

Sleep is very important as it helps the body regenerate physically , psychologically and boosts the immune system. Most people need to sleep 7-8 hours a night. Lack of sleep is a common problem for people over the age of 65 due to various long term conditions prevalent in this age group.

There are lots of triggers of poor sleep and often the reason is unclear. Poor sleep could be due to depression, arthritis (pain), environmental problems (noise, light) and bladder weakness. Obstructive sleep apnoea (a condition where the main airway closes during sleep) is a serious cause.

Lack of sleep will have a detrimental effect on your life. Practical activities like socialising, concentration when driving and performing day to day chores can be affected due to the fatigue experienced.

Sleep problems should not be looked at in isolation. Often finding and treating the cause of poor sleep can help the problem. Our consultants and other specialists will review your physical health, history and social circumstances and devise a treatment plan.

          Loss of Mobility

Help with loss of mobility in later life.

With advancing age, changes may occur that can lead to problems with a person’s ability to move around, or mobility.  Unsteadiness while walking, difficulty getting in and out of a chair, or falls are common problems as we get older.

Medical conditions like muscle weakness, arthritis, poor eyesight, joint problems, pain, and neurological difficulties (brain and nervous system) can all contribute to mobility problems. Sometimes several problems occur together to reduce mobility.

Poor mobility can lead to falls. Falls can result in broken bones, bruises, and loss of confidence. Unfortunately, older bones are thinner, break more easily than younger bones, and they heal less quickly and not as completely. This may mean that after a fall mobility is even worse. Falls have also been identified as a major cause of injury and death, so prevention is important.

Loss of mobility will probably cause a lack of confidence and reduce physical activity. Activity can strengthen bones and muscle improving your balance and steadiness.

Poor mobility can be helped if medical conditions causing it are diagnosed and treated. If you or your relative have been experiencing reduced mobility please contact our consultants who will assess and device a treatment plan to improve your mobility.

            Persistent tiredness

Help with tiredness in later life

Feeling tired all the time is a common problem in later life. Many people complain of feeling exhausted even though they are sleeping well.

Medical conditions like depression, Parkinson’s, anaemia or an underactive thyroid gland can trigger tiredness. In addition, lifestyle choices like drinking too much alcohol, a bad diet, some medicines and disturbed sleep (common in people living with dementia) have been identified as possible causes of tiredness.

Persistent tiredness can lead to feeling emotional or depressed. Reduced motivation to take part in social activities in the community due to feeling tired is another problem.

Lifestyle, and social circumstances will contribute to the feelings of tiredness and it is just as important to tackle these as it is to receive treatment for any conditions that are causing tiredness. Your consultant will discuss these with you and together you will decide what treatments are best for you.

              Shaking and Tremors

Help with Shaking and Tremors in later life

Tremors are a type of shaking movement. A tremor can affect any part of the body and most often noticed in hands and arms. They can happen at any age, but are more common in older people.

The most common type of tremor is called essential tremor which is shaking that most often involves small, rapid movements. The tremor usually occurs when you are trying to do something, such as reaching for an object or writing.

Other common causes of tremors are prescribed medicines, neurological disorders , normal aging, overactive thyroid gland Parkinson’s disease, stress, anxiety, stroke, too much coffee or alcohol.

Experiencing a tremor can have a great impact on a persons confidence. The loss of confidence can result in shying away from social interaction due to the stigma attached to tremors. Tremors can also affect activities of daily living such as dressing and driving.

Shaking or tremors can often be helped or controlled. An assessment with our consultant will help devise a treatment plan that will reduce the effects of tremors.
