Worried about memory

Help with memory loss in later life.

Memory is important to us all. Not only so we can recall what we are going to do next, or where we put those keys, but because memory puts our whole world in context; it is who we are, who we were and who the people are around us. Past the age of 50 it becomes less easy to remember things, but this does not usually affect us day-to-day except going into a room and briefly forgetting why. However memory loss may be a symptom of a more serious illness.

Causes of more serious memory loss include anxiety, depression and dementia. Some physical illnesses may also affect memory.

If you are experiencing memory loss which is worrying you we would be happy to see you to a) take a full history of your concerns b) assess your physical and psychological health, c) check your memory using established memory tests and d) discuss with you whether any other investigations are needed (such as brain scans)

Memory loss is common, but sometimes serious.

    Changes in Behaviour

Help with changes in behaviour in later life.

Unexplained changes in behaviour (such as irritability, agitation or apathy) in older people are often the only sign that a person is unwell. It is important that unusual behaviour is assessed as it may indicate a medical problem.

Sudden changes in behaviour can be a signal that someone is in pain or has an infection or other physical problem. Depression or dementia can also cause it. A person may not notice changes in behaviour in themselves, and the change may only be noticed by those around them. If you or family member has a sudden change in behaviour, early assessment from our consultants can help in ruling out medical problems as well as suggest treatment that can help with the behaviour.

      Confusion

Help with confusion in later life.

Confusion is a change in mental state in which you are unable to think with your usual level of clarity. You might feel disoriented about time or where you are, or not recognise familiar faces. Confusion can also lead to problems communicating and concentrating or making decisions. Confusion is a common problem in older people. Confusion may start suddenly or may develop slowly over time.

In the over 65s, confusion is most likely to be a symptom of an acute medical condition or dementia, although it can also be associated with depression or other conditions.

Confusion may affect day to day activities such as shopping, cooking or driving. People with confusion may not be able to communicate their needs.

Diagnosing the cause of confusion is very important as there is always an underlying cause. Treating this may help the confusion. Our consultants and specialists are skilled at assessing confusion and giving you practical tips for its prevention where possible.

        Worried about your weight

Help with weight loss in later life.

Unexplained weight loss in older people is a cause for concern. Weight loss can be caused by serious conditions. Though weight loss isn’t always a signal of a medical problem, it should always be investigated.

Weight loss can be a sign of depression, dementia, gastrointestinal issues, thyroid gland disease or cancer. As a general rule, if you have unexplained weight loss, you should see a doctor to get it checked out .

Rapid weight loss can make you experience other symptoms, such as tiredness, loss of appetite and a change in your toilet habits which can result in a reduction of social activities. You may also start to feel anxious about explaining your weight loss to your loved ones.

If you think you have unexplained weight loss, contact our consultant who will complete an assessment to diagnose the underlying issue that is causing the weight loss.

          Feeling Dizzy

Help with dizziness in later life.

Dizziness, also known as vertigo, is not only more common but also more persistent in people over 50. It is more likely to be due to physical rather than psychological causes and is more incapacitating in older people.

Dizziness is caused by various medical conditions like high or low blood pressure, heart or neurological disorders and some psychiatric conditions. Some causes have minor effects whilst other causes can be serious and even life-threatening. As a general rule, if you feel dizzy regularly and you do not know why, you should see a consultant.

Common effects of dizziness include feeling anxious about standing up, which can reduce your mobility. Other symptoms linked to dizziness are feeling sick, falls, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), amnesia and anxiety.

Dizzy spells should not be looked at in isolation. Our team of consultants will review your physical health history and social circumstances, devising treatments plans that include a variety of medicines and physical therapies.

            Falls

Help with falls in later life.

Falls and unsteadiness are common problems in later life but are not a normal part of getting older. Balance and movement are complex activities which we take for granted throughout most of our lives, but various factors can affect them, and reductions in mobility and confidence after a fall can lead to a progressive loss of health, fitness and independence. Falling more than once in a year, or any fall that results in a need for medical attention, suggests that there might be an underlying cause, and a thorough assessment is required.

Medical conditions like Parkinson’s, arthritis, joint problems, pain, disease, and neurological difficulties (brain and nervous system) contribute to falls. Sometimes several mild problems occur in unison resulting in an increased risk of falls.

Falls are the number one mobility problem that older people experience. Falls result in broken bones, bruises, and loss of confidence.

If you want help, please contact us and we can arrange our consultant to see you and assess the possible causes and risk factors for falls. Your consultant may need assessments from our other specialists (e.g., a physiotherapist) to ensure that a comprehensive treatment plan is developed.

              Feeling low or sad

Help with feeling low in later life

Most people can feel sad, depressed, stressed or anxious at times. This is a normal part of life.  As you grow older, some of life’s events and experiences can leave us feeling in low spirits or cause depression.

Low mood may be  a symptom of an underlying health condition. It may be due to depression, thyroid gland conditions, anaemia, stroke or bereavement.  If low mood lasts more than a few days, it may be symptom of one of these conditions.

Feeling low in mood has an impact on motivation.  Motivation is important for engaging in everyday living.  When you are feeling low, lack of motivation to get involved in social activities and the community is common.

Feeling low may also affect your sleep pattern, leaving you feeling exhausted and unable to complete everyday chores. People who feel low may also feel anxious, which increases their distress even more.

                I can’t sleep

Help with sleep in later life.

Sleep is very important as it helps the body regenerate physically , psychologically and boosts the immune system. Most people need to sleep 7-8 hours a night. Lack of sleep is a common problem for people over the age of 65 due to various long term conditions prevalent in this age group.

There are lots of triggers of poor sleep and often the reason is unclear. Poor sleep could be due to depression, arthritis (pain), environmental problems (noise, light) and bladder weakness. Obstructive sleep apnoea (a condition where the main airway closes during sleep) is a serious cause.

Lack of sleep will have a detrimental effect on your life. Practical activities like socialising, concentration when driving and performing day to day chores can be affected due to the fatigue experienced.

Sleep problems should not be looked at in isolation. Often finding and treating the cause of poor sleep can help the problem. Our consultants and other specialists will review your physical health, history and social circumstances and devise a treatment plan.
