Worried about memory

Help with memory loss in later life.

Memory is important to us all. Not only so we can recall what we are going to do next, or where we put those keys, but because memory puts our whole world in context; it is who we are, who we were and who the people are around us. Past the age of 50 it becomes less easy to remember things, but this does not usually affect us day-to-day except going into a room and briefly forgetting why. However memory loss may be a symptom of a more serious illness.

Causes of more serious memory loss include anxiety, depression and dementia. Some physical illnesses may also affect memory.

If you are experiencing memory loss which is worrying you we would be happy to see you to a) take a full history of your concerns b) assess your physical and psychological health, c) check your memory using established memory tests and d) discuss with you whether any other investigations are needed (such as brain scans)

Memory loss is common, but sometimes serious.

      Feeling Anxious

Help with anxiety in later life.

Anxiety is a feeling  of worry, nervousness, or unease about something.  Anxiety is considered a problem when symptoms interfere with a person’s daily life or ability to sleep. Older people may be  more at risk.

Feeling anxious may occur with physical symptoms such as shaking, dry mouth or palpitations (feeling of fluttering in your chest).

Sometimes anxiety comes on for no reason but it may be caused by social gatherings, or specific things like seeing a spider or a thunderstorm.

Feeling anxious  may lead to  to social withdrawal and avoidance of any situation that can bring on the symptom.  Older adults who experience anxiety may  become isolated.

Feeling anxious may be  a symptom of anxiety disorder, or other conditions such as depression, dementia,  thyroid gland disorders or other physical conditions. If anxiety lasts more that a few days you should see a doctor to get a diagnosis.

If you want help, please contact us and we can arrange our consultant to see you and assess the possible causes of your anxiety.

        Changes in Behaviour

Help with changes in behaviour in later life.

Unexplained changes in behaviour (such as irritability, agitation or apathy) in older people are often the only sign that a person is unwell. It is important that unusual behaviour is assessed as it may indicate a medical problem.

Sudden changes in behaviour can be a signal that someone is in pain or has an infection or other physical problem. Depression or dementia can also cause it. A person may not notice changes in behaviour in themselves, and the change may only be noticed by those around them. If you or family member has a sudden change in behaviour, early assessment from our consultants can help in ruling out medical problems as well as suggest treatment that can help with the behaviour.

          Joint Problems

Help with joint pain in later life.

Joint problems are common in elderly people. Joints are designed to let your body move and support your weight as you go through life. As you get older, wear and tear on the joints can cause pain stiffness and swelling.

There are several causes of joint pain. Some common conditions associated with joint pain are arthritis, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, and an auto-immune reaction.

Joint pain affects mobility. Reduced mobility commonly results in the reduction in community activities which can result in isolation.

If you are worried about joint pain, make an appointment with our consultants.

            Confusion

Help with confusion in later life.

Confusion is a change in mental state in which you are unable to think with your usual level of clarity. You might feel disoriented about time or where you are, or not recognise familiar faces. Confusion can also lead to problems communicating and concentrating or making decisions. Confusion is a common problem in older people. Confusion may start suddenly or may develop slowly over time.

In the over 65s, confusion is most likely to be a symptom of an acute medical condition or dementia, although it can also be associated with depression or other conditions.

Confusion may affect day to day activities such as shopping, cooking or driving. People with confusion may not be able to communicate their needs.

Diagnosing the cause of confusion is very important as there is always an underlying cause. Treating this may help the confusion. Our consultants and specialists are skilled at assessing confusion and giving you practical tips for its prevention where possible.

              Bladder Problems

Help with bladder problems in later life.

The bladder is the organ that stores urine. As you get older, the sudden intense sensation of needing to go to the toilet (urgency) may increase. This is a normal part of aging. The most important point to remember is that everyone with a bladder problem can be helped, and many can be completely cured.

Most cases of urgency and incontinence are caused by an overactive bladder or a urinary tract infection. However, for some people, the cause is never found. Bladder problems require medical attention to ensure the underlying cause is treated to avoid rapid deterioration in health and wellbeing.

Often urgency resulting in incontinence happens with no warning, first of all causing embarrassment and then discomfort. The embarrassment caused by incontinence can affect a person’s confidence and impact on their ability to engage socially.

If you are concerned about your or a loved one’s bladder problem, make an appointment to see a consultant. They will complete an assessment and develop a treatment plan. Remember most bladder problems can be resolved easily with early intervention.

Help with weight loss in later life.

Unexplained weight loss in older people is a cause for concern. Weight loss can be caused by serious conditions. Though weight loss isn’t always a signal of a medical problem, it should always be investigated.

Weight loss can be a sign of depression, dementia, gastrointestinal issues, thyroid gland disease or cancer. As a general rule, if you have unexplained weight loss, you should see a doctor to get it checked out .

Rapid weight loss can make you experience other symptoms, such as tiredness, loss of appetite and a change in your toilet habits which can result in a reduction of social activities. You may also start to feel anxious about explaining your weight loss to your loved ones.

If you think you have unexplained weight loss, contact our consultant who will complete an assessment to diagnose the underlying issue that is causing the weight loss.
